In fact we love collaborating especially if it contributes towards a big end product!

In terms of drumming you do not get much bigger than Kellii Scott of inspirational & influential alt rock legends Failure. He’s also been credited with drumming on songs by @queensofthestoneage, @aperfectcircle, @verucasaltband and plenty plenty more.

We have been a fan his and his powerhouse drumming for some time. We were so happy that he agreed to drum on our next three singles.

We waited anxiously to get the tracks back from Kellii and were immediately blown away! We cannot wait to share the first of those singles ‘Gun’ on 25.6.

Here’s part two of the story behind our single You Are Stuck which will be released on 1 May on all major digital platforms as told by Ollie.

“The song itself is rather quiet and simple in the verses almost stark like the lyrical content but hits hard in the choruses. The bridge is in the same vein as the choruses with the aim to push the song hard into the outro.

Musically, it was important for the song to have an uplifting ending and I didn’t want any words there...just music. For me, big descending chords give that sort of feeling and so the outro is based on that with sonic additions to build it up to the end. I lost track how many guitar tracks we recorded in that outro...may be we should have done more!

The outro and the ending was very much influenced by a well known shoegaze band with a nod to one of their songs in particular. When rehearsing it we had a very good idea how we wanted this part to go. In fact, the first time we rehearsed it back in September last year Bob & I knew immediately where the outro needed to go!

When we got to the studio, I had seen that band live the weekend before and had the final part of the outro in mind and sang/explained it to Mikey (Ferbrache). I’m not going to give it away but he actually took that idea forward far better than I imagined or heard in my head! We can never play it live but we might be able to tip a hat to it in some way!

Turning to the cover for the single, there was only one place that could be taken! For some reason, when thinking about the song I had the Antony Gormley figures that were in Guernsey for a while in my head. They stood there in silence staring out to wherever they were focusing. And so, the idea for the single cover was born. We got Lyanne involved and I think we captured it just right.”
Coastal Fire Dept.tag:www.coastalfiredept.com,2005:Post/62946602020-04-26T00:21:48+01:002022-04-12T21:15:27+01:00Guernsey Press Article (You Are Stuck - Single Release)
‘Stuck But Not Stalled’ a nice write up about our single You Are Stuck by Shaun at @ The Guernsey Press.

“Back in 2018 we were playing at the Chaos Festival (Guernsey) and usually before & after gigs, I like to chill quietly. After playing our set, I went in search of a place to chill. On the way (to wherever I was going), I came across a sign which said “The fog will lift”. It immediately resonated with me; I thought what a great message and a really nice positive thing to put out there. Later I found out it was put there by Sian Jones/Notes To Islanders.

Fast forward to last Summer, when I was writing songs, I came up with a chord sequence which I played around with, reversed and then simplified. I sang some randoms words “You are stuck” to the melody (always intended to change them) and in that moment, I went back to that sign. It then made me think about times we all get stuck in a rut and the need to look up and be positive.

The sign references fog and I thought about how the weather or nature could be used as a metaphor for when things go against you. Hence the first line starts “When the fog comes round” and the rest goes on to list other examples.

I imagined being on L’ancresse beach when writing that verse. As with most songs I write, I try to keep the choruses simple and if possible with a message...and so the positive line “look up” was inserted.

The next verse takes the first verse further forward and uses how you might feel when everything is going against you.”

Notes to Islanders
Chaos Events
Coastal Fire Dept.tag:www.coastalfiredept.com,2005:Post/62857622020-04-17T22:42:53+01:002022-04-12T21:15:32+01:00Control (Free Download via Bandcamp)
Who doesn’t like something for free?

We live in unprecedented times and we recognise that life is tough for a lot of people. Happier times are ahead but might be a little way off for most.

The main reason for us existing as a band is to produce our own original material, get it out there and gig a bit. We can’t gig right now but we can make getting our music out there a little easier.

So with immediate effect our album Control is totally free on Bandcamp to download with email collection.

Go to our Bandcamp (or go via our website) and download those tracks for free!

We hope you enjoy listening to them whilst in lockdown...don’t forget to give us some feedback!

PS Thank you to @mattbacon666!

The big news is Ken Andrews mixed your single, how did that come about?
Ollie “Well you asked us how we were going to better Control (our mini-album), so we asked you to get us Ken to mix the single as a starting point!”

Why did you go for Ken Andrews?
Ollie “Well I came across his band Failure quite a few years ago and not only did I love them and their songs but I thought the production of Fantastic Planet and The Heart Is A Monster was off the scale! And when I realised that Ken had produced and mixed them I was blown away. I then saw he had worked with Chris Cornell, Paramore, Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Stone Temple Pilots and many others...and I stored that away in the back of my mind...never thinking I’d ever need it again!”
Saad “We’d been a fan of his for a while and not many people know that we had thrown a Failure song in the set a couple of years ago.”
Gareth “When Ollie floated the idea we were up for it and never thought we’d get a look in!”
Bobby “Yeah, when Ollie told me his idea I thought he was crazy and you guys were also crazy going with it.”

What’s it like to have worked with Ken Andrews on your single?
Gareth “For me, the fact that someone thousands of miles away can listen to and enjoy a piece of music I have been involved in is amazing in itself. The songs/artists Ken Andrews has been involved with is incredible and to be a part of the roster of bands he has worked with is really quite cool. Essentially being put in the same list as Chris Cornell... what’s not to like! He’s done an amazing job on this track and I hope people enjoy listening to it as much as we did recording it.”

How would you describe You Are Stuck in musical terms?
Saad “Pop rock for sure..in fact it is us expanding our grunge sound a little.”
Gareth “Modern grunge with alt rock undertones. Shoegaze outro.”
Ollie “Alt rock meets grunge meets shoegaze with an unexpected twist at the end!”
Bobby “Lit!”

We understand there’s a message in that song?
Saad “Yes the song is about...actually I don’t want to give it all away but there is an underlying positive message.”

You’re half way into recording your first full album with Mikey at Apocalypse Studios, how’s it going?
Bobby “Yeah, we’ve done the groundwork and can’t wait to go back in to do some more guitars and heavy riffs!”
Gareth “We were supposed to go back in to materially finish it off a couple of weeks ago but that was postponed for obvious reasons.”

What’s the album called?
All “Connected.”

Anything you can share with us about it?
Bobby “It’s gonna be big and gnarly!”
Ollie “It’s still Grunge From The Vale but it’s taking in more influences and flavours. Probably not going to have glockenspiels or aerosol cans this time but I can hear a few other things so we’ll see!”

Have you gone about any of the recording differently this time?
Gareth “Not really, mainly the same approach as the last album.”
Saad “Got to say, it was fun recording in Apocalypse’s new bigger studio though!”
Ollie “yeah, the approach is more or less the same but we have gone for some slightly different equipment this time around...we’re looking for a certain sound which should be quite apparent when it’s released.”

Like what?
Bobby “Different amps, guitars and pedals!”
Ollie “Yeah...we’re still using a duo sonic and jazzmaster as the main guitars but we’ve layered in some more types of guitars with different pickups. Plus as Bob said...some different amps and pedals too.”
Saad “We listened to a rough track this week and the guitars we have down already are massive...”
Bobby “...and they’re gonna be bigger!”

Coastal Fire Dept. release You Are Stuck (Ken Andrews mix) the first song from their second album on 1 May. It will be available on all major digital platforms.
Coastal Fire Dept.tag:www.coastalfiredept.com,2005:Post/62802462020-04-12T17:07:40+01:002022-04-12T21:15:37+01:00Artwork/Lyanne
For our mini-album we were so happy to work with USA based photographer/artist and all round supercool Lauren who appeared on the album cover. We’re gonna do an article about her soon but you may have noticed we’ve looked closer to home for our arty collaborations recently.

Since the beginning of the year we’ve been working with Lyanne Keeling (Ly Keeling Art) who has appeared on the cover for our single You Are Stuck (to be released 1 May), did the artwork for our YouTube release of song Icarus and is set to appear in our video for You Are Stuck.

We’ve enjoyed working with Lyanne so much we asked her to do something a little different for our first full album Connected (due for release this Summer).

Lyanne will be doing a piece of artwork for every song on that album. We don’t know why we came up with this idea but we did and we are super excited about it.

Next week we’ll release the artwork for You Are Stuck. And release others as we go.

We’re also working on a few other projects with Lyanne and they’ll see the light of day in due course.

We are always keen to work with arty types and will continue to do that. This time it’s been super fun to be working with someone local. Go and check her and her artwork out.

We had planned to release ‘You Are Stuck (Ken Andrews mix)’ together with an accompanying music vid but the current lockdown means we can’t finish the video.

We live in extraordinary times at the moment. It’s important to try and be as normal as possible, look forward and be positive. Damn it! The song was written/ recorded last year and has a message of looking up and being positive!

So with this in mind, we’re going ahead with the release on Friday 1 May on all major digital platforms. The video will be released as soon as we can.
The first band the writer mentioned was the @pixiesofficial and that band is/was one of my biggest musical influences and I know the rest of the band have been influenced by them to some degree.

I first came across them when Monkey Gone To Heaven was released. At the time I didn’t really buy singles, I just bought the album. So I bought Doolittle and the first four songs (Debaser, Tame, Wave of Mutilation and then I Bleed) were like a musical hammerblow to me (in a good way!). From that time onward I was hooked and bought the back catalogue as soon as I could!

The Pixies are known for their “quiet loud” musical dynamics and a plethora of influences including sci-fi and biblical references. For me the original line-up was a perfect balance.

They have influenced many bands/musicians with the most famous of which is probably Kurt Cobain who said this when talking about Smells Like Teen Spirit “I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band...or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.”.

To me the Pixies are hugely influential and some things they do we try to emulate. On our first album there was a subconscious undercurrent of their influence in some of the songs however, on our next album (Connected)...there are probably stronger more direct influences in two or three songs. I actually tried to write a short song in the mould of a particular Nirvana song...but when we came to play it..it sounded like the Pixies...so we embraced that!

Have the Pixies influenced you? What’s your favourite song(s) or album and why?

Recorded at Apocalypse Studios, Guernsey with Mikey Ferbrache and mixed at Red Swan Studios, Los Angeles by Ken Andrews (Failure, Paramore, Chris Cornell, Stone Temple Pilots, Tenacious D, Nine Inch Nails, Beck and plenty more); ‘You Are Stuck’ sees the band draw on their grunge credentials and pull in some mainstream pop sensibilities and some serious alt-rock/shoegaze influences.

Ollie says “To have Ken Andrews, a big musical influence of ours, mix our single really is a dream come true. He was our first choice and we were super stoked he said yes.”

The video was recorded with Luis Morais directing and features Lyanne Keeling; an artist who has been working with the band.

‘You Are Stuck’ was influenced by a sign that Ollie saw at Guernsey’s Chaos Festival in 2018 which remained on his mind until writing the song last year. This is their first single released from their forthcoming second album entitled Connected; a full length album very much in the “Grunge From The Vale” vein due to be released late Summer*.

‘You Are Stuck’ will be released on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube, Amazon and plenty more digital platforms.
